ABSTRACT:
This 12 page report discusses the events surrounding the 1969 war that took place between Honduras and El Salvador after the qualifying tournament for the World Cup in soccer. Despite the passion of the fans, much greater forces were at work than simple sports fanaticism. The underlying issue was - and always has been - the matter of living space and the availability of land. International borders in Central America have been the cause of significant disputes since colonial days. However, in the 1990s and for the first time, the legislative bodies of both countries are attempting a certain level of cooperation and compromise to resolve their decades old conflicts. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
